Yesterday, the Pentagon confirmed what President Obama must have known for years: Private Bowe Bergdahl deserted his post and comrades in Afghanistan.

Presumably, that was why former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta refused to approve an initial proposal by the White House to release five top Taliban commanders from Guantanamo Bay as ransom to get Bergdahl back from the enemy. Panetta’s successor, the appallingly inadequate Chuck Hagel, had no such compunctions and approved the lopsided exchange.

Ironically, the Pentagon’s announcement comes a day after President Obama decided that we must keep more American troops in Afghanistan longer than he had previously planned. That’s because the Taliban are a very real threat to such friends as we still have there – a threat that has only grown thanks to Mr. Obama disastrously replenishing the enemy’s leadership.
