Powell lays bare Iraq’s “policy of evasion and deception”
In a comprehensive 90-minute presentation to the UN Security Council, Secretary of State Colin Powell provided a detailed account of Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction program and its policies designed to deceive UN inspectors.
Secretary Powell used an array of classified intelligence sources including audio intercepts, satellite photographs and defector and detainee statements to convince a skeptical Security Council of Iraq’s duplicity.
He also put the UN on notice that its inaction in the face of Iraq’s continued challenges puts it in “danger of irrelevance.”
In response to Powell’s case, the French Foreign Minister propsed stregthening weapons inspectors, despite Iraq’s ability over 12 years to frustrate their efforts.
