Until yesterday, Major General Harold Greene was the top U.S. officer in charge of transitioning to Afghans the responsibility for protecting their country. Like sixty other Americans before him, the general was murdered by someone wearing an Afghan army uniform.

His death says a lot about the transition to zero U.S. combat forces in Afghanistan ordered by President Obama, without regard to conditions on the ground.

As Afghans increasingly perceive our side to be the losing one, more of those supposedly with us will try to save themselves, or their families, by turning weapons on the ever-fewer Americans still among them.

It’s bad enough that Mr. Obama has set a course for losing Afghanistan. It will be even worse if, in the process, we needlessly lose more American heroes like Gen. Harold Greene.
