George Orwell’s classic novel about totalitarianism, 1984, was a cautionary tale about the manipulation of words by government and media to obscure reality and control populations.

These days, characterizations by the Obama administration and the press of strategically significant developments and potential, or actual, adversaries materially affect our understanding of such things – and our ability to respond appropriately.

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan became “overseas contingency operations.” Terrorist attacks became “man-caused disasters” conducted by “militants” and “violent extremists.”

Most recently, it seems that illegal aliens – people unlawfully in our country – are now to be called simply “migrants.”

Words matter. Americans require the truth, not Orwellian doublespeak.
