The military officer assigned the thankless – and probably futile – mission of training so-called moderate Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State was caught earlier this week telling the truth.

The New York Times reported Major General Michael Nagata has expressed concern that: “We do not understand the [Islamic State] movement, and until we do, we are not going to defeat it. We have not defeated the idea. We do not even understand the idea.”

The problem is not just widespread willful blindness about the “idea” behind the global jihad movement – of which the Islamic State is but one manifestation.

Worse yet, we are not allowed to acknowledge that idea.

General Nagata, the idea is Islamic supremacism and the conviction that God wants its ideology of shariah imposed worldwide.

Now, let’s defeat it.
