The Luntz Research Companies: Survey Questions On A U.S. Deployment To The Golan Heights

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

These data were obtained in a nationwide survey of adults, 18+ years of age, conducted January
2 and 3, 1995. In theory, a survey of this size has a margin of sampling error of +/- 3.1%.

67. Israel and Syria are negotiating a peace agreement that is expected to include an Israel
withdrawal from the area known as the Golan Heights, and the stationing of about 800
U.S. military personnel on the Golan Heights as “peacekeepers” or “peace monitors.” Are
you strongly in favor, somewhat in favor, somewhat opposed, or strongly opposed to the
deployment of U.S. military personnel as monitors on the Golan Heights?

      11 % = STRONGLY FAVOR
      24 % = SOMEWHAT FAVOR
      24 % = SOMEWHAT OPPOSE
      34 % = STRONGLY OPPOSE
      7 % = DON’T KNOW/REFUSED

68A. [IF IN FAVOR IN 67] Would you still be in favor if you believed that the U.S. military
personnel would probably be attacked by terrorists or be caught up in renewed fighting between
Syria and Israel in the future?

      48 % = YES
      44 % = NO
      8 % = DON’T KNOW/REFUSED

68B. [IF OPPOSED IN 67] Would you still be opposed if non-military U.S. government
personnel were to be used to monitor a Syrian-Israeli agreement, instead of military personnel?

      56 % = YES
      37 % = NO
      6 % = DON’T KNOW/REFUSED

Should congressional hearings be held before an agreement is reached calling for U.S.
participation in this peacekeeping or peace-monitoring operation on the Golan Heights, or
is that not necessary?

      66 % = YES
      28 % = NO
      6 % = DON’T KNOW/REFUSED

Apart from your opinion of the idea, do you believe the United States would actually keep
the peace-monitors on the Golan Heights if they suffered casualties — either from
terrorism or renewed fighting between Syria and Israel — or would the U.S. peace-monitors be withdrawn?

      36 % = MONITORS WOULD BE KEPT
      52 % = MONITORS WOULD BE WITHDRAWN
      12 % = DON’T KNOW/REFUSED
