Thirty-seven years ago, on June 4, 1989, the Chinese Communist Party ordered the People’s Liberation Army to open fire on its own citizens in and around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. What began as student-led calls for reform, anti-corruption, and greater freedoms turned into one of the most brutal suppressions in modern history.

Today, the CCP still censors any discussion of the events, while Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te is pressing Beijing to finally ‘acknowledge the truth’ and confront its past.

Colonel Grant Newsham, retired U.S. Marine, former diplomat, and author of When China Attacks, joined NTD for insight.
