HAMAS II: The Story of Islamic Jihad on Israel’s Front Lines
The Center for Security Policy is pleased to present the latest addition to its Jihad Readers Series of monographs today, with the publication of “HAMAS: The Story of Islamic Jihad on Israel’s Front Lines” by veteran author and Middle East analyst, Ilana Freedman. This book marks the second of two that Ms. Freedman has written about HAMAS (an Arabic language acronym for Ḥarakat al-Muqāwamah al-ʾIslāmiyyah or the Islamic Resistance Movement), the Islamic terror organization that is the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. Her first book on HAMAS for the Center, “HAMAS, CAIR, and the Muslim Brotherhood: The Secret Plot to Destroy America,” was published in 2017.
While that first volume focused on the subversive activities of the many HAMAS and Muslim Brotherhood front groups operating virtually unnoticed and unopposed inside the United States, this follow-on volume returns to explain the ideology, origins, and activities of HAMAS in its Middle Eastern milieu. “HAMAS: The Story of Islamic Jihad on Israel’s Front Lines” delves deeply into the roots and development of one of Islam’s most aggressive and vicious jihad terror organizations. It may be difficult for many to comprehend the depth of the hatred for Israel and its Jewish people that is harbored among the ranks of HAMAS. Ms. Freedman does an exceptional job at explaining that it is, in fact, mainstream Islamic doctrine, taught to Muslim children from the earliest ages (especially in the HAMAS stronghold of the Gaza Strip), that inspires generation after generation of HAMAS cadre to pledge itself to the annihilation of the Jewish State of Israel. The burning tires, flaming kites, rockets, and missiles launched at Israel unceasingly out of Gaza are but the visible expression of a hatred embedded in the Islamic canon itself: Qur’an, hadiths, Sira, and shariah (Islamic Law). No amount of concessions or good will can ever overcome what is believed the very will of Allah to annihilate Israel.
As Ms. Freedman understands so well, the Islamic command to jihad to subjugate the earth to an Islamic State under shariah rule is incumbent on every Muslim; but in HAMAS, the Jewish people find an implacable foe that seeks to return them to the conquered status of the dhimmi and their ancestral homeland to Islamic dominance. And it is not only HAMAS that Israel must confront, because it is the Islamic Republic of Iran that arms, backs, funds, and trains HAMAS fighters—and, regardless of the supposed Sunni-Shi’ite divide, for the same doctrinal reasons.
Given such a record of genocidal animosity, it can be perplexing for outsiders to understand how anyone, much less a plethora of charitable and faith-based organizations, gullible European leaders, as well as international media could possibly lend their support to such as HAMAS. And yet they do. This enigma, too, Ms. Freedman ably tackles in her signature bold, forthright style.
She helps make understandable the next-to-impossible task faced by the Israeli Defense Forces, its democratic government, and the Israeli people themselves to provide security that keeps them all safe from a savage enemy and is yet a model of respect for human rights and the value of human life that is the essence of the Jewish faith.
