Nobel Prize Committee Stoops Even Lower With Snowden Peace Prize Nomination

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Is anyone really surprised that leftwing members of the Norwegian Parliament nominated Edward Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize?  It would be a surprise if Snowden was NOT nominated.  Why is this news?

It was news in 2006 when John Bolton and Ken Timmerman were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for their work uncovering Iran’s nuclear program.   I don’t remember the major news media giving this any coverage.

The Nobel Peace Prize has little credibility in the eyes of many Americans.  Barack Obama won it in 2009 despite being in office less than a year and having no international achievements as president.  I believe the bizarre decision to give the Prize to Mr Obama was actually a finger in the eye to President George W. Bush who the European left despised.  Al Gore and the notoriously biased Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won it in 2007 for their work on global warming.  (Not a good idea to bring this up in the frigid U.S. South right now.)  The EU was awarded the Peace Prize in 2012 probably because the Nobel Committee couldn’t agree on another politically correct nominee.  The Nobel Committee has spurned many great men and women who made genuine contributions to peace like Pope John Paul II.   It’s only a matter of time before the Prize is awarded to Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Snowden’s nomination for the Peace Prize is typical of the naïve world view of the European left.  Norwegian Socialist Parliament members Bard Vegar Solhjell and Snorre Valen said they nominated Snowden because he has “revealed the nature and technological prowess of modern surveillance” and “contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order.”   How can they possibly believe Snowden has made the world more stable and peaceful?  These leftist politicians are oblivious to the dangers of the world in which we live today and how the counterterrorism intelligence programs weakened and ruined by Snowden were keeping the whole world safe, including Norway.  I’m sure the warnings today by senior U.S intelligence officials at a Senate hearing that the risks of terrorist attacks by radical Islamists is just as high as it was in 2001 will be ignored by the Nobel Committee, assuming this is even reported in the Norwegian press.

Snowden probably has the inside track to win the next Nobel Peace Prize given how politicized it has become and the fantasy world of the European left.   If he wins the prize, Snowden will be further glorified by the news media and is certain to give a pompous and self-righteous acceptance speech.   This will be very annoying but I’d rather endure such a spectacle rather than learn that Snowden’s treachery led to a deadly terrorist attack which could have been prevented by the intelligence programs he destroyed.
