Senators Durbin and Klubuchar lead push to flood US with 65,000 Syrian refugees by next year

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) are leading a group of fourteen senators in calling on President Barack Obama to significantly increase the number of Syrian refugees allowed to resettle in the United States. Their letter to Obama cites precedent in that “the United States traditionally accepts at least 50 percent of resettlement cases from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).” With the UNHCR seeking to resettle 130,000 Syrian refugees worldwide, that means an influx of 65,000 to American shores by the end of 2016.

The letter then cites “leading U.S. refugee organizations (including Church World Service, HIAS, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, Episcopal Migration Ministries, USCCB, National Association of Evangelicals’ World Relief.” These organizations and others constitute the VOLAGs (Voluntary Agencies), ostensibly non-profit and non-partisan organizations who have a chokehold on refugee policy for the United States.
